Logan Circle District of Columbia Home Elevator Installation

We recently performed a remodel in the Logan Circle area of Washington DC. Working in such a historic home, that is now much more accessible thanks to the elevator we installed, is always a pleasure. Logan Circle’s history dates back pre-Civil War and is such an important part of this nation’s history. As such, the homes in the neighborhood are also a delight to look at. Of course, working in such a historic home also presents its own difficulties; we were nonetheless able to install a Stiltz Duo Alta home elevator and make the home more accessible.

Design Challenge

This home was divided into four separate residences. The owner had done this because after purchasing the home in the 1970s, they wanted to live in the middle two floors apartment while aging in place. An elevator was the obvious solution but a standard elevator simply would have been too heavy, which meant that the installation would have had to include the apartment below. A shaft or hoist installation would have taken up 25 square feet, 5’ by 5’, on each floor—that’s huge and the client simply did not have the floorspace to make that work for them. Our solution? A Stiltz home elevator.

Stiltz Home Elevator Solution

Lightweight and shaftless was the way to go, hence our use of the Stiltz Lifts Duo Alta. To understand why this worked, take a look at the ASME 17.1 elevator code. Section 5.3, Through The Floor Elevators, details the acceptability of 2-stop residential elevators that lifts a lid as it goes through the second floor but leaves the lid behind when it goes down to the first.

This ideal solution resulted in no shaft, less than 3’ by 3’ footprint, and only weighs 350 pounds while still holding a capacity of 375 pounds. Working with the client to meet their needs and ultimately come to the decision to use the Stiltz Lifts Duo Alta was the perfect way to satisfy the requirements of a job such as this.

Satisfied Clients

This client was kind enough to leave a positive review for us and their new Stiltz home elevator online, which we’d like to share:

“Working with Signature to install my Stiltz elevator was a pleasure, beginning with the consultation with Gary, who helped us choose the perfect location for the elevator that did not clash with our 19th century house, to two great crews, who were efficient, professional and always cheerful and pleasant. The elevator works perfectly and is great fun to have!”
