3 Ways To Create an Accessible Bathroom

a bathroom with double sinks and two mirrors

If you have read our post about turning your kitchen accessible, then you have probably wondered what other rooms in your home could be made more accessible. Whether you live in Howard County, Montgomery County, Fairfax County, Silver Spring, or the DC area, you have several options to create a bathroom that will help you age in place comfortably. Here are some changes you can make to create an accessible bathroom.

Grab Bars

When it comes to limited mobility, having sure footing is key, especially in a bathroom where there is a higher risk of falls from a slippery floor. Installing grab bars is a quick and easy way to make your bathroom safer and more accessible. You can use these bars next to the bathtub for help getting in and out or beside the toilet for added leverage when getting up or sitting down. Grab bars are great for anywhere that you want extra support.

Bathtub Modifications

There are several options for making a bathtub more accessible. The first, and probably the best option is investing in a walk-in bathtub. A walk-in tub eliminates all fear of tripping on the edge of the tub when getting in and out. Simply open the door and walk across level ground. And many walk-in bathtubs come with added features, like a seat and gentle water jets to give you the best bathing experience. If you do not have a full bathtub, then you can try installing a bench inside the shower area. By doing this, you won’t have to endure standing in the shower if you get tired easily, which will help you stay safe and comfortable by reducing the risk of falls.

Toilet Safety

Using the toilet can be especially hazardous for those with limited mobility. For using the toilet, you have alternative accessibility features. Some of these features include raised seats and armrests. Other ways you can make your bathroom more accessible are by having the doorways widened to fit a wheelchair and installing an overhead lift for transferring into the bathtub.
